Hunting for a new author amongst the aspiring bunch of delhiets, those new budding writers, I came across this book called ‘Gently falls the Bakula’. It was almost 8.30pm and I was getting really late to go home, getting an assurance from the book vendor of exchanging the book the next day morning (incase I do not like the book, I hurried for a cab!
Hash! I took a deep breath and started reading it on the way back in the train and in less than 48 hrs I have already finished the book! Now that says a lot about the book and a little bit about my obsession of finishing a good book once I start it!
I had heard a lot about Sudha Murty and her writing but witnessed it for the first time and I fell in love with her down to earth, simplistic and easy to read style of writing! Neither am I a hardcore reader nor a good writer for that matter but what makes me write my first ever blog post on ‘Gently falls the Bakula’ itself is the answer to how interesting the book is!
“Gently Falls the Bakula” is suppose to be one of her first books. It is a story of a bright intelligent girl Shrimati from Hubli who's full name is Shrimati Shrikant Despande, same as her classmate Shrikant Despande. Shrimati always out ranks Shrikant (Shri) in all exams and clearly is smarter and more intelligent among the two!
After school Shri goes to IIT to become an engineer and Shrimati does her MA in history because she is passionate about it and their friendship continues to grow
These just growing kids fall for each other and inspite of the rivalry amongst both the families, they get married at an early age of 22!
Their romance is showcased in a very cute manner which almost seems to be unreal in today’s time’ (After all, the book written almost 30 years ago but it is still so winning and significant!)
As ambitious as Shri is, he moves out of the small town in Hubli to Mumbai along with Shrimati. Shri’s mother never accepts Shrimati as her daughter-in-law and hence finds ways to disturb their peaceful marriage life by creating some or the other financial obstacles planned by Shri’s sister Rama. Shrimati also aspires to do her Ph.D in history but always has to sacrifice for her husband and in-laws. Bearing every bit of it, Shrimati plays a very obedient and dutiful wife to her husband giving up her urge to study further.
Shrikant becomes a super successful IT professional and from a software engineer becomes the MD of the company in a short span of 10years whereas Shrimati remains his last priority all these years!
The best part of the book is the ending, which shows how we turn this ignorance to a habit and become victim of it. It describes how even the obvious matter can be unseen in the craze to achieve worldly fame and take away the actual jewel of life- Love!
To summarize, this book is about every Indian woman who sacrifices everything for the love of her life. Who is bought up with the qualities to be a dutiful wife with no expectations! It is a very well written book, quick and easy to read, one of the best novels on relationship.
Note: Just if your wondering what Bakula means, it is a name of a flower and their romance starts around a Bakula tree and the title ‘Gently falls the Bakula’ is a perfect one to signify the fading romance between the two!
